Emotional Erwee's hard work pays off with maiden Test ton: 'It's a very special day'

Image from Getty Images Sarel Erwee carded his first Test century in just his third innings at the Hagley Oval on Friday as the Proteas batted themselves into a strong position on day one of the second Test against New Zealand. Erwee's 108 off 221 (14 x 4) helped South Africa to 238/3 at stumps as they look to level the two-match series, and while the 32-year-old put the team first in his initial assessment of the day, it was impossible to ignore how significant this moment was for a man who just two years ago never thought he would be in the position he is today. Erwee has played just under 100 first-class matches and has become a seasoned veteran on the domestic circuit where he has piled runs on for the Dolphins. Under the leadership of national head coach Mark Boucher, though, Erwee has been brought into that set-up where he has spent the last year carrying drinks for the Test team. With Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram the settled opening pair,

Ryan Rickelton benefitting from facing Lions bowlers as he gets Proteas Test call up

Sourced from IOL Johannesburg — Having Malusi Siboto, Duanne Olivier, Lutho Sipamla and Sisanda Magala to practice against has greatly aided Ryan Rickelton’s development as a batter this season. There was a lot of work Rickelton had to do himself of course, but it was useful to gauge how well his off-season work functioned, by putting himself up against the most fearsome quartet of bowlers on the domestic circuit. “We usually get good spicy wickets at the Wanderers nets, and obviously, you ask the guys to take the newest balls they can get, and we have a proper contest,” Rickelton said on Wednesday. “I know if I’m holding my own against them, not getting out, and playing good shots against them, it's a good sign for me.” Rickelton’s the 10th highest run-scorer in this season’s Four-Day competition, but he’s one of just three batters to score two centuries so far. Both of those hundreds came at the Wanderers, in matches in which the opposing teams got bowled out for under 200.

Proteas star Markram shoot up ICC T20 rankings

Sourced from News 24

The ever-improving Aiden Markram has shot up the latest ICC rankings following his performance at the T20 World Cup.

The 27-year-old's stunning knock of 52* (25) on Sunday went a long way towards securing an impressive victory against England in Sharjah, and while that was not enough to see the Proteas progress in the competition, it was another reminder of Markram's class and how important he has become to the Proteas cause.

Markram finished the tournament with 162 runs at an average of 54.00 and a strike rate of 145.94, and when the latest rankings were released on Thursday, he had moved up on both the batting and allrounder charts.

Markram has moved up three placed to now sit 3rd on the batting rankings behind Babar Azam (1st) and Dawid Malan (2nd), while he has also moved up to 7th on the allrounder rankings.

Rickelton leads SA A to huge win

Sourced from SA Cricket Mag A career-best century by Ryan Rickelton set South Africa A on their way to a massive 184-run victory over Zimbabwe A in the second one-day match in Harare on Monday. The Central Gauteng Lions batsman smashed 169 off 150 balls (15 fours, 3 sixes) as the visitors amassed 365-6 at the Harare Sports Club, where Senuran Muthusamy then claimed 4-37 to help bundle out the hosts for 181. The result enabled Malibongwe Maketa’s side to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series, with the third game to come on Wednesday. After comfortably winning the opening match of the tour this past Saturday, the South Africans again dominated in match two. Rickelton, who was called up by the Proteas earlier this year, was in extraordinary form, sharing in a first-wicket partnership of 120 with Janneman Malan (53 off 52 balls, 6 fours) and then adding 137 for the second wicket alongside Reeza Hendricks (51 off 46 balls, 4 fours, 2 sixes). That took the a

Sourced from Momentum Multiply Titans

Lizaad Williams was the big winner at the Momentum Multiply Titans Annual Awards, scooping four gongs, including the prestigious Titans Player of The Year Award.

It was the Titans’ final Player of the Year awards of the franchise era, an event which was held virtually, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The major winner of the evening was Williams, whose startling debut season across all formats culminated with a call-up to the national team.

“This is all very humbling. I was thrilled to become a Titans player, but I never expected to make such an impact and settle so well with my teammates this season,” Williams exclaimed.

“When I joined the Titans, I knew there would be huge competition for places. But it has been a brotherhood, and I couldn’t have had the success I had this season without my bowling partners at the other end. Credit, too, to the coaches and management for all their patience this seas

Markram leads South Africa to easy T20 win over Pakistan

Sourced SABC News

South Africa opener Aiden Markram struck a brisk half-century as the hosts levelled the four-game Twenty20 International series against Pakistan with a six wicket win in the second match at The Wanderers on Monday.

Pakistan elected to bat, but some poor stroke-play saw them restricted to 140 for nine in their 20 overs, well below par on one of the best batting wickets in world cricket.

South Africa never looked troubled in their reply as they reached their target with 36 balls left in a comprehensive win for a
